How to make soy wax melts with this super easy tutorial! They’re a great way to scent your home and make fabulous wedding favours too!
Not only are soy wax melts are a lovely and mostly natural way to scent your home, they make amazing homemade gifts too!
Step 1. Melt the soy wax.
For this I use a small metal jug inside a saucepan of water on my stove. (double boiler)
You can also use a Pyrex glass measuring jug and heat your soy wax in the microwave. Start with 1 minute timers, when you are close reduce to 30 seconds. Stir between each one. As you get closer to your target temperature of 175-185 Fahrenheit
Step 2. Add colour- but only if you want too.
We sometimes add colour but we prefer the more natural look. You will need to add the colour when the wax is on the burner, the wax chips need to melt at a higher temperature, if you are using colour drops (liquid form) you can add these afterwards, stir to make sure the colour is even throughout the melted wax.
Step 3. Time to add fragrance oil
The temperature needed to add fragrance oil to soy wax is 175-185 degrees Fahrenheit. If your wax is too hot, your fragrance oil will break down and not produce any smell. If it’s too cool, the wax and fragrance won’t combine properly.
It’s so important to get the correct ratio of fragrance oil to wax because this will decide whether your wax melts actually give off enough scent when they’re heated.
Pour the fragrance oil into the wax and stir well and smell to see if you are happy with them, this is how we do it.
Step 4. Time to let it cool to 135 degrees
Pouring temperature for soy wax is about 135 degrees, let it cool for a few minutes before pouring it into your molds. You know its time to pour when it starts to look cloudy.
Step 5. Time to pour the wax into molds
Now it is time pour the wax into the silicone molds or wax molds. We use heart shape molds this is mainly because our boutique is filled with love. It can be any shape as long as each piece will be small enough to fit into your wax warmer.
Step 6. Let it cool
Let the wax cool completely, undisturbed. It will harden and turn opaque when it’s finished. I always leave mine over night. This ensures they are fully dry.
Step 7. It is time to remove wax melts from the molds
Once the wax melts are nice and hard, you can turn the mold over and pop them out it is as simple as that.
Step 8. Store in a sealed container
Wax melts will have the best and strongest scent if you let them cure for a few weeks. Store them in a cool dark location in a tightly sealed container or plastic bag so they don’t lose their scent.
Step 9. Are you giving your wax melts as a gift?
We use card pillows to give them as a gift, we place up to six inside depending on the box size, we also put a warning label on so people understand how to use them.
Step 10. Now its time to enjoy your wax melts.
Place two or three soy wax melts into the melting cup on your wax warmer and turn it on. It’s that simple! You can continue to re-use your melted wax until it no longer gives off the scent you want.
